Each IPEM must renew accreditation every two years. Submission of the renewal request must be received by IEMA not later than on, or about, August 1 of the year the certificate expires.

Below is a checklist for following the steps necessary to complete your application for the IPEM Program. PLEASE INCLUDE A COPY OF THIS SHEET WITH YOUR APPLICATION.

  • Complete Training Requirements
    • To qualify for renewal, each applicant must complete, as a minimum, forty-eight (48) hours of IEMA/FEMA/IESMA sponsored training and/or conferences. (This could include successfully completed Independent Study courses from FEMA. Up to 4 courses, at 2 hours each). Applicants can petition IEMA to accept up to twenty-four (24) hours of training received outside of IEMA/FEMA/IESMA training. These petitions must include transcripts or completion certificates along with a description and list of objectives for each course. IEMA will accept credit hours from accredited college institutions. Each renewal application must include completion certificates, unless IEMA already has them on file, for all courses that have been added to the IPEM "Training Requirements" over the previous two-year period. The hours for these courses can be included to meet the 48 hours of IEMA/FEMA/IESMA sponsored training. Renewal certificates are awarded at the annual IEMA conference.

  • Complete Exercise Requirements*
    • Completed Request for IPEM Exercise Validation Form.
    • Detailed description, written by the applicant of the specific exercise tasks that the applicant was assigned. This could include any design, evaluator or controller functions. The description should provide detail on what the applicant learned from their involvement in the exercise. Add as much detail as needed to allow the IPEM Committee to have a good understanding of your involvement. No longer than 1-2 paragraphs.
    • Copies of any specific items that your exercise involvement helped produce. These items could include, but not be limited to, the exercise objectives (which are included on the "Exercise Validation Form"), master sequence of events, copies of messages and the after-action-report (ARP).
    • *Applicants are allowed to substitute a real-world major event for the exercise requirement. The applicant would be required to submit a copy of the after-action-report (AAR) and the improvement plan (IP) utilizing the HSEEP format. If this option is used, the applicant is still required to submit their 1-2 paragraph description, but not the IPEM Exercise Validation Form.

  • Submit letter to the Director of IEMA requesting re-accreditation (no later than on, or about, August 1 of the year the certificate expires) along with the following:
    • Copy of your offical IEMA transcript (Can be requested by email, Jill.Gordon@illinois.gov or by letter to IEMA Training Program, 2200 S Dirksen Parkway, Springfield, Illinois 62703)
    • Copy of IPEM required course completion certificates not included in your offical IEMA transcript.
    • Completed Request for IPEM Exercise Validation Form
    • Detailed description of the specific assigned exercise tasks.
    • Copies of any specific items that your exercise involvement helped produce.
    • The renewal application packet should be mailed to:

        IEMA Director
        2200 South Dirkson Parkway
        Springfield, Illinois 62703-4528
        Atten: IPEM Application

  • If you cannot complete all the renewal requirements, but wish to remain in the program, you can submit a request in writing for a two-year grace period. This will ensure that your certificate does not lapse and give you two additional years to complete all current program requirements. At the time you submit your renewal application, any additional program requirements that have been put in place would also have to be complied with. If you choose to request the two-year extension, please submit your written request, no later than August 1, 2006, to IEMA Director Andrew Velasquez at the following address:

    • Director Andrew Velasquez
      IEMA
      2200 South Dirksen Pkwy
